It Takes a Campus to Comply: Clery, Title IX and VAWA for Risk Management Professionals

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Complying with the Clery Act (including the recent Violence Against Women Act changes) and Title IX cannot be the responsibility of just one office. To do a proper job, institutions must eschew traditional silos and work together on policy drafting, implementation and assessment of goals. Risk management professionals can play a key role, and this session will discuss the laws and methods SUNY uses to create a “culture of reporting and response” in cases of violence, including sexual violence. We will discuss the legal requirements, recent research findings, and paths forward to implement policies and procedures that both comply with the relevant laws and (more importantly) provide a safer college for our students. There will be plenty of time for questions and answers as well as discussion.

As a result of participating in this session, attendees will learn that:
 Training in complying with the Clery Act, Title IX and related obligations cannot be handled in an afternoon, it must be incorporated into the professional obligations of myriad faculty and staff over the course of the year.
 Compliance is not as good as compliance plus acting in the interest of students and the campus community. The law sets a floor, but it does not set a ceiling.
 The specific rules regarding these federal laws are complicated and not always consistent. Attendees will receive an introduction to these rules as well as resources to find all the laws and regulations. In addition, attendees will receive resources to help move towards compliance as a campus.
